A group of Dutch and Flemish specialists has recently started research into the role of gut feelings in the diagnostic reasoning process of physicians working in the different specialistic domains in the hospital. These specialists will collaborate with the Maastricht-Antwerp research group on gut feelings in general practice. The first step has already been done by a focus group with several specialist including an internist, a paediatrician, a neurologist, a cardiologist, a surgeon and an emergency physician from the Isala Hospital in Zwolle in the Netherlands. More focus groups with other specialists will follow. Another step will be a survey aiming to investigate in which domains gut feelings are present in the diagnostic reasoning process.
